Sydney Home Inspection
Who would pay $1.3m for the house above? Good question and plenty of people would ask it.
The answer – of course – is it isn’t the house itself, its where it is located that’s important.
And its located in up a very trendy, up and coming inner city suburb of Sydney – Redfern.
Redfern was a run down area like many inner suburbs due to white flight in the 50’s and 60’s, where white people left the slums of the inner city (the classic inner city ghettos) to the spacious outer suburbs.
Young couples wanted to raise their families with space, green yards, shopping malls and driveways etc. not the grimy, closed in and cold terraces they grew up in.
I bet they didn’t get their Sydney home inspection in the day. Probably should have.
And now the reverse is happening. They’re moving back in and they’re cashed up! Some call it gentrification or disparagingly yuppiefication.
Its an interesting phenomenon that’s happening to largish cities world wide, just as white flight was a world wide phenomenon in the 50’s and 60’s.
As a point of interest, in the 50’s and 60’s newly arrived migrants moved in to the cheap inner suburb houses of Sydney that were deserted by white people as they were run down and very cheap. That’s the Sydney experience anyway, other countries, native people and blacks as well as migrants took the cheap housing. I wonder if white flight will happen again as the inner city suburbs are becoming increasingly “white”.
Anyway, i digress, this article is about Sydney Home Inspection and the question is “should the purchasers of the above property pay for a building inspection?”
If it has an heritage order and cant be demolished, the answer is yes.
If its a knock down and rebuild, of course the answer is no.
So i guess the correct answer is “what is the property and the land going to be used for?”
So, if you purchase an old house and you are going to keep it intact -for whatever reason – get a Sydney home inspection asap.
Don’t waste time or you might miss out on a lovely old inner suburb house, the demand is hot for the above reason. They’re selling for ridiculous prices.
